Building 15: The Perfect Showcase
Modern design deserves a space with character — and Building 15 on Main Street delivers. Originally home to Baldwin’s Department Store, a Farmville staple for nearly a century, this historic building has been thoughtfully reimagined as the perfect showcase for Green Front’s newest collection. With preserved architectural details and wide-open spaces, it’s where history and contemporary style collide.
A Bit of History
Baldwin’s department store was started by Albert Baldwin in an old wooden building in Curdsville, Va. His son, R.A. Baldwin, brought the business to Farmville’s Main Street in 1900. By 1966, the Farmville store had taken over neighboring storefronts. (Fun fact: These original facades still exist behind the current brickwork!) Baldwin’s eventually expanded with additional locations in Richmond; Lynchburg; and Durham, North Carolina. Farmville’s Main Street location thrived for nearly a century. In 1999 it was acquired by Green Front.
Over the past year, Green Front President and CEO Den Cralle partnered with restoration expert Al Buczek to breathe new life into this historic space. Their work not only preserved the building’s architectural charm but also transformed it into the perfect showcase for our modern furniture collection. With high ceilings, open layouts and sweeping staircases, the space invites visitors to explore, offering dynamic views of our modern setups from every angle.
One of the standout features? The restored “selfie staircase” — a quirky staircase to nowhere, originally designed for women to model dresses in the store’s heyday. Details like this infuse the building with character, making it more than just a showroom. It’s a space where history and modern design coexist, creating an experience as timeless as the pieces we showcase.
