2315 MONUMENT:
THE ARCHITECT & THE STORY
“The characteristic qualities of Spanish Architecture are its dignity, austerity and distinction contrasted with a romantic sense and a vividness of imagination.”
– From William Bottomley’s Spanish Details, 1924
The inspired 1924 design of acclaimed architect William Lawrence Bottomley, 2315 Monument Avenue conjures a Mediterranean escape in the heart of Richmond. A sought-after architect in Richmond society, Bottomley designed seven homes on Monument Avenue and 14 total in the Richmond area.
This home was originally intended to be built for J. Scott Parrish in the Colonial Revival style. After a trip to Italy and Spain by Parrish and his wife, 2315 Monument Avenue was completely redesigned. Captivated by the beautiful architecture, they requested that Bottomley recast their home in the Mediterranean Revival style. This was the perfect project for Bottomley. The design of the mansion coincided with the writing of his 1924 book on Spanish architecture, Spanish Details.
Many of the details described in Bottomley’s book appear throughout this historic home, including a classic red tile roof, stucco exterior, large windows and cast-iron Juliet balcony. The gem of the exterior, a private courtyard with a Byzantine ornamental pool, delighted Mrs. Parrish, who was an avid gardener. Inside the grand foyer, a curved staircase with wrought-iron railing rises from the terracotta floor. Elegant features abound, including arched doorways and original ceilings. These features include the French saying, Aimer et garder son foyer: Love and keep your home.
2315 Monument Avenue has only grown in beauty over the past century. Follow along with Green Front as we revitalize this historic home set in the heart of RVA!
